Sura and Baya(the legend of Surabaya)

The  Legend of Surabaya

A long time ago in East Java there were two strong animals, Sura and Baya. Sura was a shark and Baya was a crocodile. They lived in a sea. Actually, they were friends. But when they were hungry, they were very greedy. They did not want to share their food. They would fight for it and never stop fighting until one of them gave up.
It was a very hot day. Sura and Baya were looking for some food. Suddenly, Baya saw a goat.
“Yummy, this is my lunch,” said Baya.
“No way! This is my lunch. You are greedy! I had not eaten for two days!” said Sura.
Then Sura and Baya fought again. After several hours, they were very tired. Sura had a plan to stop their bad behavior.
“I’m tired of fighting, Baya,” said Sura.
“Me too. What should we do to stop fighting? Do you have any idea?” asked Baya.
“Yes, I do. Let’s share our territory. I live in the water, so I look for food in the sea. And you live on the land, right? So, you look for the food also on the land. The border is the beach, so we will never meet again. Do you agree?” asked Sura.
“Hmm... let me think about it. OK, I agree. From today, I will never go to the sea again. My place is on the land,” said Baya.
Then they both lived in the different places. But one day, Sura went to the land and looked for some food in the river. He was very hungry and there was not much food in the sea. Baya was very angry when he knew that Sura broke the promise.
“Hey, what are you doing here? This is my place. Your place is in the sea!”
“But, there is water in the river, right? So, this is also my place!” said Sura.
Then Sura and Baya fought again. They both hit each other. Sura bit Baya's tail. Baya did the same thing to Sura. He bit very hard until Sura finally gave up. He went back to the sea. Baya was very happy. He had his place again. The place where they were fighting was a mess. Blood was everywhere. People then always talked about the fight between Sura and Baya. They then named the place of the fight as Surabaya, it’s from Sura the shark and Baya the crocodile. People also put their fight as the symbol of Surabaya city.

a Story From West Java

The Legend Of Tangkuban Perahu

Long time ago in west Java, Indonesia lived a beautiful girl. Her name was Dayang Sumbi.  She liked weaving very much.  Once she was weaving a cloth when one of her tool fell to the ground.  She was very tired at the time so she was too lazy to take it.  Then she just shouted outloud.
‘Anybody there?  Bring me my tool.  I will give you special present.  If you are female,  I will consider you as my sister.  If you are male, I will marry you’
Suddenly a male dog, its name was Tumang, came.  He brought her the falling tool.  Dayang Sumbi was very surprised.  She regretted her words but she could not deny it.  So she had to marry Tumang.  Then they lived in a small village.  Several months later they had a son.  His name was Sangkuriang.  He was a handsome and healthy boy.
Sangkuriang liked hunting very much.  He often went hunting to the wood using his arrow.  When he went hunting Tumang always with him.  In the past there were many deer in Java so Sangkuriang often hunted for deer.
One day  Dayang Sumbi wanted to have deer’s heart so she asked Sangkuriang to hunt for a deer.   Then Sangkuriang went to the wood with his arrow and his faithful dog Tumang.  But after several days in the wood Sangkuriang could not find any deer.  They were all disappeared.  Sangkuriang was exhausted and desperate.  He did not want to disappoint her mother so he killed Tumang.  He did not know that Tumang was his father.  At home he gave Tumang’s heart to her mother.
But Dayang Sumbi knew that it was Tumang’s heart.  She was so angry that she could not control her emotion.  She hit Sangkuriang at his head.  Sangkuriang was wounded.  There was  a scar in his head.    She also repelled her son.   Sangkuriang left her mother in sadness.
Several years later, Sangkuriang became a strong young man.  He wandered  everywhere.     One day he arrived at his own village but he did not realized it.  There he met Dayang Sumbi.  At the time Dayang Sumbi was given an eternal beauty by God so she stayed young forever.  Both of them did not know each other.  So they fell in love and then they decided to marry.
But then Dayang Sumbi realized a scar on his Sangkuriang’s head.  She knew that Sangkuriang was his son.  It was impossible for them to marry.  She told him but he did not believe her.  He wished that they marry soon.  So Dayang Sumbi gave a very difficult condition.  She wanted Sangkuriang to build a lake and a boat in one night!  She said she needed that for honeymoon.
Sangkuriang agreed.  With the help of genie and spirits Sangkuriang tried to build them.  By midnight he had finished  the lake by building a dam in Citarum river.  Then he started building the boat.  It was almost dawn when he nearly finished it.  Meanwhile Dayang Sumbi kept watching on them.  She was very worried when she knew this.  So she made lights in the east.  Then the spirits thought that it was already dawn.  It was time for them to leave.  They left Sangkuriang alone.  Without their help he could not finish the boat.
Sangkuriang was very angry.  He kicked the boat.  Then the boat turned out to be Mount Tangkuban Perahu.  It means boat upside down.  From a distant it looks like a boat upside down.

Mount Tangkuban Perahu

The Mystical Story From Java

NYAI RARA KIDUL AND MATARAM KINGDOM

Long time ago, there was a beautiful princess named Dewi Kadita. Her mother was a queen of her father, King Siliwangi of Pajajaran Kingdom. They had been the most beautiful mother and daughter at Pajajaran. It was made the other wife of King Siliwangi jealous. So, the other wife  used something like black magic to change her body and her daughter’s.
One day when Dewi Kadita woke up, she felt there was wrong with her body.  “aaaa, mother, what’s wrong with me?”, cried Dewi Kadita. what she saw in the mirror was the most horrible creature. Her skin became full with brown scales, which smelly yellowish secretion slowly appeared. Her lips were also blackened and wrinkled. She could hardly realized herself.
“mother!”, she screamed.
“yes, sweetheart”, her mother turned around from the bed and faced her. Both of them screamed at the top of their voice.
“mother, what happened to us?”, asked Dewi Kadita. Both were crying.
“i don’t know, Sweetheart”, said her mother, but actually she knew who did that to them.
The news spread quickly. King Siliwangi was told that they were bad luck for the kingdom. Then, the king forced them to leave the kingdom that night. They left the palace with no soldiers guarding.
They want to walk  to the neighbor kingdom, Mataram, but not knowing how to get there, they reached the southern coast of Java and finally they decided that they would walk along the coast to the east.
On their seventh day and seventh night walking, Dewi’s mother said,”I can’t stand it anymore”. And Dewi answered,”mother!please be strong for me!”. “i’m sure there will be someone who can help us.”and the mother said,” leave me alone here, Go to Mataram. Try to meet King Panembahan Senopati and ask him for his mercy.” Then Dewi Kadita said,”I can’t leave you, mother. Hiks hiks hiks”. Her mother sat on her knees. Blood flowed from her nose. Then she fell, her breath was gone. Dewi screamed,” Mother! Please don’t go! Please don’t.”
Suddenly a big wave pulled her mother’s body into the ocean. Dewi ran after the body, but the southern ocean was too powerful for the girl. She ended up sitting above a rock about a kilometer from the sea. She was so tired then she fell asleep on it.
While sleeping, she was sure that she heard her mother say,” jump into the water, sweetheart. It’s the only way to help you out of the curse.” When she woke up, with no second thought, she jump into the sea.
The violent ocean swallowed her. She was appeared to the surface of the sea about helplessly, up, down, twisted. “this is it”, she thought. “this is the end”.
Only miracles could explain how amazed when she was opened her eyes. She was in a wonderful golden  palace on the bed of the ocean. She looked at the mirror, she couldn’t believe what she saw. She had become even more beautiful. She was dressed in green, which made a contrast to her bright skin.  She turned around and saw an unbelievable view. All the sea creatures were bowing to show their respect.” Long live the Queen of the South Sea”, they said. Only then, she realized that she was not a common human being anymore. The spirits of the ocean had crowned her to be their Queen and named her Nyai Rara Kidul, which in Javanese means ‘the beutiful majesty from the south’. “king Panembahan Senopati of Mataram Kingdom is having a meditation at the beach,my queen”, said the attendant. And Nyai Rara Kidul answered,”oh i see. I will see him, bring me there.”
She looked the handsome king sitting on a rock. As she walked toward him, the king opened his eyes. They fell in love at once and the king asked her to be his wife. Nyai Rara Kidul said,” my mighty king, i’m honored to be your wife. But forgive me that i can’t be at your side as a normal as wife should, for iam the queen of the south sea. but, i will be loyal not only to you but also to your descendants, the kings of mataram. I will protect the kings and their people. But now, i will even help you conquer the Pajajaran Kingdom”.  The king smiled and nodded his head. “may i add one thing, Your Majesty? She added.”i will be the only one who is allowed to wear something green to honor my king. Maybe harm should be done to those who wear my sacred color at the southern coast”.
To this day, people who visit the southern coast of Java respect and fear Nyai Rara Kidul by not wearing green near the beach.
